Jones's causeway across that marsh became today's Main Street, and the village has been managing the consequences ever since.
The 1944 hurricane put three feet of seawater into businesses at the foot of Main Street; the September 2018 flash flood sent water running down Main Street like a river, with two feet of water outside Theatre Three; and the village's own recent watershed study identified exactly why it keeps happening: steep terrain funnels stormwater downhill at speed, the historic ponds and wetlands that once absorbed it, including Crystal Lake and the original marsh, were filled in decades ago, and when high tide coincides with heavy rain, the harbor blocks gravity drainage entirely and water backs up into streets and buildings.
The study mapped the convergence zones where flooding hits hardest: the Main Street and Barnum Avenue corridor, Maple Place by the fire department, Barnum Avenue near Mill Creek, and the low-lying blocks near East Broadway and Mary Bayles Park.
